Synopsis
Book is author's personal account of physical remains of vanished Jewish communities in Spain. Beginning with brief summary of history of Spanish Jewry the chapters that follow deal with 25 pre-Expulsion Jewish communities. Holy Office of Inquisition and Expulsion in 1492 part of "legal process" harking back to Visigoth era (5th C.E.) when Jews were forcibly separated from both pagans and Christians. The ultimate purpose was extermination.
Jewish Remnants in Spain has value as guide book for tourists, esp. Jewish tourists. 187 illustrations included are author's creation.
Author Biography
Sidney David Markman
Professor Emeritus of Art History and Archaeology, Duke University. Recipient of many honors, awards, and research and publication grants. Bibliography includes five books and scholarly articles on colonial architecture of Guatemala and Central America.
While researching connections between colonial architecture of Central America and Spain, he discovered Jewish presence.
